It’s a short but sweet article that explains everything you need to know, without any BS.
After you are done reading this article, you will have a good understanding of how your top competitors get their leads and grow their landscaping businesses.
There are 3 main components to this “recipe” which I will talk about in this article:
- Google My Business listing
- Great website
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Before I explain how these 3 work together, let’s first see how people find landscapers online!
Also, let’s not kid ourselves, referrals have always been the best way of getting more work, and they will forever remain the best way to get the best customers.
But, there are so many people that don’t know who to ask for a landscaper, or they might just feel uncomfortable asking their neighbor or a friend what landscaper are they working with.
That’s why a lot of people are going to go to Google to find out who to work with. I am sure that you can grow your business without showing up on Google, but you will be missing out on so many potential customers.

Now, let’s see how people search for landscapers online!
How do people find landscapers online?
Let’s say somebody wants to improve their yard, how are they going to find a landscaping company to help them?
Answer: Most people are going to go to Google and search for landscapers near them.
Here is what they are going to see when they search landscapers in their area (in this case it’s Thaxton, VA).
- First, they are probably going to see Google Ads. But, most people are going to skip over Google Ads because they don’t trust people who pay to be shown first. Google Ads also tend to be really expensive so it’s not worth it for you.
- Then, they are going to see the so-called “local pack”, which are basically the top 3 businesses in the local area that are most relevant to what the people searched for. This is where we want to show up, ideally. But, even if we don’t show up in the local pack, you can still get a ton of phone calls and website visitors by having a well-optimized Google Business listing
- After local pack, they will see other search results. Our next goal is to show up here as well because we can get more website visitors and convert those website visitors to customers.
People are going to use the same process when they look for most other services: Tree care, tree removal, lawn mowing, hardscaping, etc.
Google Business Listing
In order to show up on Google maps and hopefully in Google local pack, you need to create a Google Business Listing.
Creating a Google Business Listing is only a small part of it. The listing needs to be properly optimized and the website needs to be properly structured so that Google can understand what kind of services you provide. Otherwise, your business is not going to get a lot of views.
Google takes the best Google Business Listings in the area and ranks them based on numerous factors.
I optimize the Google Business Listing and the website based on a secret recipe I developed over the years so that Google ranks your business higher than your competitors. But, here is what you can do yourself that will help you rank higher and get more calls and website visitors.
Fill out the Google Business Listing completely
Log into your Google Business listing and add relevant information there. Fill it out as much as you possibly can. Add all the services you provide, write a clear description of your business, etc.
By doing this, you are going to increase your chances of showing up higher on Google and getting more calls.
Get as many reviews as you possibly can
This is a huge part of it, and it’s something that you have to do in order to get any results.
Even if you are ranked #1 all the time on Google, nobody is going to look at you if you have a lot fewer reviews than your competitors. It just doesn’t look trustworthy.
Which business would you rather call?
Get as many reviews as you possibly can! You can get a unique URL from your Google Business Listing dashboard and you can send this review link to the happy customers.
Building a Great Website
A lot of people might call one of these businesses right after seeing their reviews, but most people would want to find out more. They would like to see your previous work, they would like to learn more about you, who you are, etc. They would like to look at your services to get an idea of what you can do for them and similar things.
That’s why your website is a crucial part of your business. It needs to answer all those questions and other important questions. It also must provide a few easy ways for customers to easily contact you and get a hold of you.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The term “SEO” might sound weird because a lot of people complicate it, but it’s actually really simple.
SEO is about making improvements to the website and Google Business Listing so that both of them can show up high on Google when somebody searches for landscaping services.
Having a website and a Google Business Listing is not enough, we need to make sure that Google ranks us higher than our local competitors.
There are 2 main places where we want to rank:
- Google Maps (If we are lucky, we might show up in local pack as well)
- Organic Search results
We need to rank higher on both Google Maps and organic search results. We can rank on Google Maps with our Google Business Listing, but we need to make sure that our website is optimized so that we can rank on organic search results too.
It’s important to point out that all of these things work together like a mechanical watch. If one part is off, it will affect all other parts as well, and you will not reach your full potential.
As you can see on the image, all those other search results below the local pack are called organic search results. Google just analyzes a bunch of websites and ranks the best ones at the top.
SEO is a huge field and it would be impossible to explain everything because I would need to write a couple of books about it. The worst part would be that after I am done, I would need to write more books because technology changes so rapidly.
The best tip I can give you is to write descriptive content on your website and to fill out your Google My Business listing as much as possible. Although it’s might not be much, it will increase your chances of beating your competitors.
Unfortunately, that is the only piece of advice that I can give you right now. I tried to write more but it just gets too complicated for a post and it defeats its purpose.
